The fully rugged Panasonic Toughbook CF-31 is designed to excel in the roughest conditions. It is perfect for construction sites, mechanics' garages, and public service. However, just like anything else, every computer has strengths and weaknesses.
Don't consider this review as an indication not to purchase this laptop. We want to ensure you know some potential issues you could encounter with a CF-31. These are some of the most common problems we see on the Toughbooks that come into our repair department or our building for refurbishment.
Power Port Built On The System Board
What's so bad about the power port being soldered onto the system board? Well, if your power port were to break or stop working, you would have to replace the entire system board to replace the port.
The best advice we can provide to combat this issue is to be gentle with your power adapter. Don't just rip it out of the port or plug it in as hard as possible. Try to take better care of it so you don't have to worry about replacing this port as often.
Port Covers Easily Break Off
In addition to the power port possibly having issues, the port covers, one of which covers the power port, are commonly known to snap off.
Port covers are essential for anyone working in environments with dust or debris. These port doors ensure that nothing gets into your ports while not using them.
Although all port covers have the same design, the power port cover typically gets opened and closed the most, so we usually replace it the most. The hinges are just a thin piece of plastic, so they break right off when they wear.
Touchpad Wears After Significant Use
The touchpads are another common part we frequently replace on the CF-31s that come into our refurbishing shop. The touchpad has been a problem with the design since the CF-25. Equipped with a similar design, the touchpads on the CF-31 wear faster than those of its predecessors.
Broadband Card Screw Mounts
If you were to open up your CF-31, another common problem you might face involves the installation of the mobile data card. These screw mounts holding the card in have a tendency to break very easily. The screws screw into a very thin circuit board and are not as sturdy as what you might expect to come from a Toughbook. On the other hand, if you don't have a mobile data card and don't plan to install one, you may never have to worry about this.
Motherboard Retains Power Even When Off
Another problem you may face when repairing or installing parts on your CF-31 is the fact that the CF-31 tends to continue to hold power in its capacitors even after its power is switched off. This problem can be an issue if you replace parts like the screen or keyboard. If replaced while the motherboard still retains power, shorting the motherboard with electricity is easily possible. It is very important to remember to shut down the laptop, remove the battery, and completely drain the capacitors by flipping the power button with the battery removed and the unit unplugged. Following these steps ensures the laptop is fully discharged, preventing further damage.
Keeping The Fan Clean
Finally, the last problem we cover in this article concerns the CF-31's cooling fan. The cooling fan has a small grill that allows airflow to cool the internals of the CF-31. Having a vent on the CF-31 allows dust and debris to build up around the fan quickly. Fortunately, the fan is isolated from most of the other parts of the laptop, but clogging the vent can allow the CF-31 fan to break, make noise, or stop altogether. Keeping this vent clear and clean of dust and debris can extend the lifetime of the fan and help keep your laptop cool.
Panasonic Toughbook CF-31: Still A Great Choice
Overall, the CF-31 Toughbook is an excellent choice if you need a fully rugged laptop. Prior to the CF-40, it was one of the most rugged laptops available from Panasonic. This list identifies the most common problems with these laptops, but nothing should scare you from purchasing one; we highly recommend it.
