The Getac S400 is an excellent choice for anyone who needs a more durable computer. This semi-rugged laptop is great regardless of the task at hand and the environment it’s in. This computer offers reliable performance without compromising portability, making it an excellent option for those requiring a rugged and portable solution for their computing needs.
Notable Features of the S400
The S400's backlit keyboard is unique among most rugged laptops. The backlight glows red, allowing the Getac to provide light to the keyboard without being too bright to be blinding in the dark. This keyboard is excellent for people like police officers who are staked out late at night and need to remain hidden while still being able to see. The keys are comfortable to type on and work well mechanically, too!
Thanks to its tough outer shell, the S400 is among the toughest semi-rugged laptops on the market. Even the Panasonic CF-53 and CF-54, two staple semi-rugged laptops on the market, almost feel flimsy compared to the S400’s chassis. The S400 may weigh heavier than semi-rugged laptops, but it is a great, durable laptop.
Another positive feature of the Getac S400 is its highly durable touchpad. It seems more responsive and is constructed of more robust materials than the touchpad found on most Panasonic laptops. These touchpads tend to last longer and have fewer issues than many of the touchpads typically found on semi-rugged laptops.
The model S400 reviewed in the video features the version of the S400 that has a touchscreen. While it’s a valuable aspect of the laptop, the touchscreen is not as good as what you may find on other rugged laptops. The touchscreen is not quite as responsive as its rugged brethren, but it does hold up reasonably well against cracks. It’s not a bad feature, but it certainly could be better.
A Minor Flaw
There’s not much to dislike about the functionality of this laptop. One of the few flaws we could find has nothing to do with the operation or performance of the S400. Some of the paint used to surface the laptop seems to wear quickly and chip away with minimal effort. While not crucial to its operation, having the laptop coated in better-quality paint would have been nice. However, if you plan to use it in a harsh environment where it will see wear and tear regularly, perhaps the condition of the paint may hardly be of concern.
Ports and Upgrades on the Getac S400 Laptop
The S400 comes with many useful ports, slots and upgrades. It has 3 USB 3.0 ports, a Firewire port, a serial port, an HDMI port, a headphone/microphone jack, a VGA port, a gigabit NIC, an ExpressCard/54 slot, and a PCMCIA slot.
Depending on the model, the S400 can provide both Bluetooth and GPS. With the correct docking station and mount, this laptop even mounts in a vehicle for portable use. For those using it out in the field, this computer and its accessories could prove invaluable.
